You ended up here after visiting the "DVD-Compatibility page".

On this page you will find details on a particular DVD player, in this case the Microsoft XBox .

Note: Input form YOU, our WeetHet visitors, is very welcome! So if you have this DVD player and have different or additional experiences with it, then please complete the form on this page.

Note: The information on this website is based on input from you, our visitors, and information we found on the Internet. That's why we cannot guarantee that all information is 100% correct and/or complete. Please read the disclaimer.

Note: For DVD+R and DVD+RW a firmware update might be needed. If that's not an option (to difficult or no new frimware available), a little trick might make these discs readable as well. See the DVD+R(W) Compatibility issues for details.

DVD - What can this DVD-Player?

Supported Media-Types

The Microsoft player can handle these CD/DVD Media-types:

 • Standard CD's (silvercolored commercial CD's)
 • Standard DVD's (silvercolored commercial DVD's)
 • CD-Rewritables (CD which can be erased after recording, also known asCD-RW genoemd)
 • DVD-Recordables of the type DVD-R en DVD+R (DVD for one time recording)
 • DVD-Rewritables of the type DVD-RW en DVD+RW (DVD which can be erased after recording)

These media type will not work with the Microsoft player:

 • CD-Recordables (CD for one time recording, also known as CDR)

MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 formats

This player by Microsoft can display these MPEG1/MPEG2 variants:

 • KSVCD (Super VideoCD variant - MPEG2 video and standard Super VideoCD resolutions)

The Microsoft DVD-player does not seem to be able to display these MPEG1/MPEG2 formats:

 • VideoCD (VideoCD compliant)
 • eXtended VideoCD (more than one factor is not VideoCD compliant)
 • CVD (older VideoCD look-a-like format)
 • Super VideoCD (compliant to the Super VideoCD standard by Philips)
 • eXtended Super VideoCD (more than one factor is not Super VideoCD compliant)

The following MPEG1/MPEG2 variants have not yet been tested:

 • KVCD (VideoCD variant - MPEG1 video and standard VideoCD resolutions)
 • KDVD (DVD variant - MPEG2 half or fullsize image)

Note: There are multiple variants of K(S)VCD out there. However, in this database we stick to standard (S)VCD resolutions. If you plan to use a different resolution then you're basically working with a X(S)VCD variant.
The stunning thing with K(S)VCD is that Kwag managed to put up to 360 minutes of movie (with sound!) on a single (Super) VideoCD disc or up to 10 hours of movie on a single DVD!

Other formats

Besides the well known MPEG1 and MPEG2 variants, more and more DVD-players support additional formats.

the DVD-player by Microsoft seems not to be able to work with these formats:

 • DivX (MPEG4 variant - ie. DivX, XviD, etc.)
 • SUB/SRT Ondertitels (subtitles used with DivX movies, see the VobSub website)
 • MP3 (popular music format commonly used in the Internet)
 • WMA (not often used, crappy, format by Microsoft - Windows Media Audio)
 • Ogg Vorbis (open source audio format - superior to MP3)

Region Free?

Region-free is not very critical, but is needed when you decide to get DVD's from other regions (for example from the USA - where DVD's are released much earlier and are usually much cheaper). See also : Regio-Codes.

Unfortunally we do not have any information on this in our database, Sorry!

Disable MacroVision?

MacroVision is not really a problem in normal situations. However when copying a DVD to for example a Video Tape, MacroVision might become a pain in the but. Older TV-sets, without a video-in capable channel, might also cause problems.

For the lucky folks amongst us that have a beamer: disabling MacroVision migth save you some serious problems. See: MacroVision for details.

Note: at least 99% of the DVD players come with MacroVision.

Notes

Additonal information/tips:

The XBox might require a mod for displaying K(S)VCD movie. Using a mod and the XBox MediaPlayer enables DivX and Subtitle support as well. For more details see XBox MediaPlayer.
